inGame footage of various games. In the future I hope to add reviews. ^_^

In all honesty: DotA looks like Zelda 1  when compared to Demigod on video. I thought Warcraft III looked better, but yuck, you can see it's engine's age.

I never played DotA, so I can't judge where the one loses and the other scores, but from that little that I know about DotA, their heroes have relatively few tactical choices on how to spend their experience points when compared to DG. Max 6 skills or so ?

Ok, but then there are loads of heroes as opposed to mere 8 Demigods, which is plenty for starters in my opinion.

And the creativity of the skills/heroes/DGs ? On DGs side, we have all kinds of damage skills, buffs and debuffs for DGs and minions. The invincible Mist of Erebus is something more unusual, as well as the towers of Rook. The godawful reach of Regulus' Snipe isn't too commonly seen in other games either, I think, as well as being able to eat buildings (Rook again). Last Stand looks fresh too, making death count for more than just a suicide bomb.

DotA has the big fat Undead with the chain dragging enemies to you, which seems pretty original. Anything else which is cool and unusual?

So, apart from the multiplayer issues Demigod is better by far. And I doubt DotA started with 100 heroes either.

Well, you'll be hard pressed to find ANY gaming magazine that doesn't compare DotA to DG. So I thought I'm not too far off when asking about the differences.

Even though I stated the obvious fact that Demigod has better graphics than WC3, I get shit for that.

And I'm not even trying to prove that DotA is crap or something, but that that doesn't stop stupid rebukes from coming.

On the other hand I heard some nice arguments where DotA is still superior to DG, what the differences are and, by extension, what DG misses to become even better (not counting MP issues).

Well for one, the majority of them make a reference to DotA in an attempt to give readers an idea of how the game mechanics of DG actually work, on the other hand, if they are actually trying to make a full blow comparison I would say the same thing to them.

In a lot of ways DotA is better than DG right now, right now being the key, I played Dota for 2 years in CAL, and haven't played a round since I picked up this game.  Its not about what is better currently, DotA has had plenty of time for refining heros, the map, balancing, and item lists, it has been out for years.  DG on the other hand, is new, and still well within the refining process.  They shouldn't be compared, by anyone.  DotA will always have limitations because it is a WC3 custom map, and DG being a game by itself, only has limitations held to what GPG and Stardock can accomplish together, the sky is the limit.

dota only has 1 map ?

on May 25, 2009

Yes, dota is played on 1 map that is constantly updated, fog of war is used quite a bit in strategy, it has many shortcuts and pathways heros can sneak through during escape or gank attemps as you can see in the vid posted by stacked in this thread.

if you want to compare graphics of course demigod wins..hands down..but if you want to compare gameplay and actual compatibility..im gonna have to go with DOTA because they are so many damn issues with connectivity in demigod..i mean i cant even join a game without getting 10kping while connecting with players on us east..and i live in NYC..the multiplayerr aspect of DG still needs ALOT of work because half of the people who bought the game cant even play online yet.

Dude Im willing to bet over half  of the people who have the game have no problems.

Lets compare apples to oranges, their both fruit but taste totally different.

Same with with Demigod and DotA, both could be considered in the same "category" of game, but both approach their goals differently.

I'll take that bet. Lately almost every game I've been in have had massive server splits. All my shit is configured correctly.

Be nice or Rook will crush you!

Maybe I'll grab WC3 just to check out dota for myself.

Can you play that solo vs AI before having to endure noob-haters?

on May 26, 2009

Picking up Dota to give it a "shot" isn't really doing the game justice.  It will take months just to learn all of the heros and item combinations in the game.  If you want to pick up Dota, pick it up because you want to play it, not because you want to compare DG to Dota.  That kind of mind set won't even get you pack the first few weeks of getting beat down being called a noob and being told you never should have been born.

Don't get me wrong I love Dota for what it is but after picking up DG I have played very few games of Dota.  I'm not saying that DG is better, but rather its fresher with many more possiblities that Dota currently can't do.

I believe someone stated earlier in this thread that there are only a handfull of heros that are competitive.  He is correct.  Out of the 90+, there are maybe 15 to 25 that are used in the majority of games.

After playing Demigod for a while I am starting to think that the only thing Dota has over demigod is last hitting (I believe demigods system is better) and ganking/map awareness (which DG can fix with a new map).

I personally prefer Demigod to DOTA but i think DOTA's map wipes the floor with Demigod's offerings. Demigod is more arena based while DOTA offers more of a...i don't know what you'd call it, but more of a fighting 'environment.'

Like someone posted previously, in DOTA you can sneak around and take people by surprise and lanes play a lot more importance. In Demigod it's more like a sport where you don't really have this. Sure you can try and surprise gang up on people but it's not the same.

I would love if Demigod tried to implement a more DOTA'esque map approach by creating an arena along those lines. Hell if a fan could almost make a fan version of the DOTA map i reckon that + Demigod's heroes and features would be an absolute winner combination.

There are AI maps but the AI is about as stupid as the DG AI....well actually it's not QUITE as stupid, but its close. http://www.getdota.com/ at the bottom is an AI maps link. The plus side is there is testmode now which so you can pick multiple heroes, give yourself money and levels and all that if you just want to test out stuff. It's nice for teaching someone some of the stuff.

100% agree

When they finally open DG to modders, I wonder how tournaments will develop.

Fan made DGs or maps might be nice, but they are guaranteed to be unbalanced.

Also, it will be a bit hard to create a new DG with the amount of detail found in the existing ones. Check the above rook vid in HD to get a glimpse of the awesome details inside.

The WC3 crowd had it relatively easy since Blizzard provided them with numerous models and a kind of hero creation framework, which made DotA possible in the first place.
