inGame footage of various games. In the future I hope to add reviews. ^_^

In all honesty: DotA looks like Zelda 1  when compared to Demigod on video. I thought Warcraft III looked better, but yuck, you can see it's engine's age.

I never played DotA, so I can't judge where the one loses and the other scores, but from that little that I know about DotA, their heroes have relatively few tactical choices on how to spend their experience points when compared to DG. Max 6 skills or so ?

Ok, but then there are loads of heroes as opposed to mere 8 Demigods, which is plenty for starters in my opinion.

And the creativity of the skills/heroes/DGs ? On DGs side, we have all kinds of damage skills, buffs and debuffs for DGs and minions. The invincible Mist of Erebus is something more unusual, as well as the towers of Rook. The godawful reach of Regulus' Snipe isn't too commonly seen in other games either, I think, as well as being able to eat buildings (Rook again). Last Stand looks fresh too, making death count for more than just a suicide bomb.

DotA has the big fat Undead with the chain dragging enemies to you, which seems pretty original. Anything else which is cool and unusual?

So, apart from the multiplayer issues Demigod is better by far. And I doubt DotA started with 100 heroes either.

Aroddo

When they finally open DG to modders, I wonder how tournaments will develop.

Fan made DGs or maps might be nice, but they are guaranteed to be unbalanced.

Also, it will be a bit hard to create a new DG with the amount of detail found in the existing ones. Check the above rook vid in HD to get a glimpse of the awesome details inside.

The WC3 crowd had it relatively easy since Blizzard provided them with numerous models and a kind of hero creation framework, which made DotA possible in the first place.

not to mention that the World editor (The modding program used in Wc3) is incredible easy to use and effective.

on May 27, 2009

The World Editor is possible because the maps were using a tile based system. Demigod's maps are full 3D meshes. If a map maker were to exist for public use, I'd imagine it supporting a model format that is exportable from the common 3D software (Blender, 3Dsmax, Maya, Softimage, etc). The map maker would then allow for the placement of flags, Citadels and the like, as well as AI markers of some sort.

Community (start of game "have fun and good luck" five minutes into game "omg, we already gave up first blood. !#$3 this, NOOB L2P. and then DIE in a FIRE" player leaves)

for one game the above conversation is common

for the other game that conversation is just becoming popular

Win. No online game is complete without the "pro pubbers."

"Guaranteed to be unbalanced" is a huge disservice to the up-and-coming/hobby mappers out there. Fan-made maps have often become the best maps in various games and dismissing them like you did is a blatant spit to the face of the same people who have shaped the PC gaming industry.

Dota got height maps, that makes a 10 year old game looks more next-gen than demigod

on Jun 11, 2009

Demigod can support height levels, too, but doesn't offer maps right now.

Once they do the strategic possibilties on those maps will be most interesting. E.g. Rook can't jump down a (relatively) steep slope, but UB and Sedna can climb it. And while they can't climb down cliffs, Erebus can bat swarm down.

Interesting prospects, but if the height levels are too large the maps will lose their clearness.

There is significantly less "line of sighting" in Demigod so I think height is a pointless idea.

It's very important in Dota, on the other hand.

I typed a whole chunk worth of information on both the games and I accidentally closed the tab. UGH.

Well I'll cover ONE thing many have not.

WC3 Battlechest has PLENTY of other HILARIOUSLY FUN games on Battle.net while Demigod only has just one game in itself.

The mod-kit in WC3 enables THOUSANDS and THOUSANDS of maps with unique gameplay.

Eg.

1. Tower defense. You build towers and defend against wave of opponent creeps. Usually fun, but when the creeps start to overwhelm you, it gets irritating.

2. RPG-based games. I've seen Maplestory RPG in it and it was hilariously stupid but fun.

3. LOTS of anime and movie adaptation into the game - These are the best. I've played stuff like Resident Evil in WC3 and it was hell fun with a good team destroying those undeads. Anime games like Anime Fight are awesome too. Had a chance on my fav. Bleach characters.

4. JUST DUMB GAMES LOL - Games like Slide Spongebob Slide. Hilariously stupid. You control spongebob and you have to slide your way through the slippery ice and avoiding enemies on the ice. Its a clicking fiesta as you slide your spongebob, and I have to say it phails because battle.net is server/client, so delay is inevitable. Still, its MINDLESS FUN. Other stuff like Tree Tag, where its virtually tag+hide and seek, where treants (tree-like creatures) have to escape from Infernals. The infernals are the ones that chase the treants and once tagged, the treants will be captured and will have to await fellow uncaptured treants to free them. Its once again, mindless fun. There are also ridiculous stuff like Riddles where they'll present you riddle questions with the hints to the answers lying on the map. You'll have to search and think real hard to find the answer.

Hundreds more different games not mentioned because it will be impossible to cover them all. But yeah, as long as the mod-kit is there, new maps are bound to be released and they're HONESTLY, all that you'll need to convince you to grab a WC3 Battlechest instead of Demigod, considering you're NOT planning to pirate WC3, where you will NOT have access to all these games as they are only present on Batlle.net, which needs CD-key authenciation, where of course, pirates don't have

The value in a WC3 Battlechest is MUCH MUCH better than Demigod, and that ALONE should prompt you to get WC3 over Demigod if you could only choose one. I know this is irrelevant to Dota vs Demigod, but if you're going to play Dota the LEGIT way (by buying the Battlechest), then you will have access to Battle.net and that is where ALL these mindlessly fun stuff are there for you to play. Dota is fun, but prolonged gaming on it would be boring. These games > Dota/Demigod IMO. Sorry to Dota/Demigod fans.

Cheers.

I think graphics are becoing less and less of an issue. I mean really, how much better looking can games get? Game devs will be just adding extra eye candy soon for the heck of it just so there is a reason to upgrade your computer The smart once will make games that look good without busting your CPU. Team Fortress 2 is a good example. Nothing ground breaking, but a great style that never gets old.

Gameplay is definitely #1 here. As far as gameplay goes they are both pretty equal. DoTA has been around for a while and it's a free mod so it has TONs more options. Demigod has some different features on it's own plus it's new and fresh. If they add 2-4 more Demigods and a way to add custom maps that can look nice and don't require the beautiful 3d backrounds, I think it'll be a classic as well.

the problem is that whenever u look at the latest thing u think it looks great but in 5-6 years  some one will look at this and thing man i usto play that

on Jun 11, 2009

This is probably preaching to the choir but theres alot more to the game than just the graphics improvement over Dota.  The eval i did focuses mainly on DG as a game and not directly comparing it to Dota. http://lagwar.com/home/archives/5061

If by best you mean the worst crap ever!

Naruto RPG?

Final Fantasy Tower defense?

Dragon Ball Z arena?  Goddamn it, that's not Piccolo - it's just a naga model.
